COPYCAT WAFFLE HOUSE HASH BROWNS

Copycat Waffle House Hash Browns

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds of frozen shredded hash browns, thawed
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste

Optional Toppings:

  • Diced onions (“smothered”)
  • Melted cheese (“covered”)
  • Jalapeños (“peppered”)
  • Diced cooked ham (“chunked”)
  • Gravy (“topped”)
  • Chili (“capped”)

Directions:

  1. Prepare the Hash Browns:
    • Ensure the hash browns are thoroughly thawed. This can be done by leaving them in the refrigerator overnight or by placing them in a colander under cold water until thawed, then patting them dry with paper towels. Removing excess moisture is crucial for achieving the crispiness characteristic of Waffle House hash browns.
  2. Preheat the Skillet:
    • Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Add the vegetable oil and allow it to get hot. The oil needs to be hot enough so that when you add the hash browns, they start sizzling immediately.
  3. Cook the Hash Browns:
    • Spread the hash browns evenly over the surface of the skillet. Press them down lightly with a spatula to form a thin layer. Season with salt and pepper.
    • Cook without stirring for about 5-7 minutes until the bottom is golden brown and crispy. Use a large spatula to check the underside.
    • Once the first side is golden, flip the hash browns to cook the other side, pressing down again to ensure even browning. This should take another 5-7 minutes.
  4. Add Toppings:
    • If using toppings, add them after you flip the hash browns. For cheese, sprinkle it over the top and let it melt. If using onions or other toppings that need to be cooked, you can scatter them on the raw side before flipping or sauté them separately and add them once the hash browns are cooked.
  5. Serve:
    • Once both sides of the hash browns are crispy and any toppings are added and heated through, remove from the heat.
    • Serve hot as part of a breakfast plate with eggs and bacon or as a delicious side.

Tips:

  • Crispiness: For extra crispiness, ensure your skillet is not overcrowded. Cook in batches if necessary to keep them in a single, thin layer.
  • Oil Temperature: Make sure the oil is hot before adding the hash browns, but not smoking, to avoid burning.
